Across Texas, the night sky still shines bright in places where communities have taken action to protect it. To celebrate those efforts, DarkSky Texas has introduced the Dark Sky District Awards, which recognize legislative districts home to certified International Dark Sky Places. These awards highlight the importance of local leadership in the fight against light pollution.
DarkSky Texas recognized seven Texas Senate Districts and eight Texas House Districts as home to at least one International Dark Sky Place. Each was presented with the DarkSky District Award. International Dark Sky Places earn the prestigious designation after going through a rigorous application process administered by DarkSky International.
What are International Dark Sky Places?
The International Dark Sky Places program is a conservation program that recognizes and promotes stewardship of the night sky in protected areas and communities worldwide. All designated places must address local outdoor lighting issues by following the Five Principles of Responsible Outdoor Lighting established by the Illuminating Engineering Society and DarkSky International. They must require all new outdoor lighting to follow suit.
Each Dark Sky Place promotes better lighting to help restore our view of the nighttime sky, improve the safety and well-being of people and wildlife, and save energy. They must provide outreach and education about the benefits of preserving our heritage of the night sky with better lighting. International Dark Sky Places monitor the night sky quality in their area. They comply with additional criteria depending on the type of place they are: a park, community, reserve, urban night sky place, or sanctuary.
There are 23 certified International Dark Sky Places in Texas. Learn more about each location on this webpage celebrating the Dark Sky Places of Texas.
Why Dark Sky Places Matter
Reducing light pollution isn’t just about seeing stars. It improves public health, protects wildlife habitats, conserves energy, and enhances safety. By recognizing the communities and lawmakers making a difference, DarkSky Texas hopes to inspire even more areas to embrace responsible lighting practices.
