About the Partner:

Comal County Friends of the Night Sky (CCFNS) is approved as a
501(c)3 organization as of December of 2020. In addition to our members’ activities
promoting dark skies, we publish a robust informational and educational website, have a
YouTube channel, and have thousands of Facebook and Nextdoor group members. We
give over 25 Night Sky presentations to HOA’s, clubs, schools, and community
organizations each year.

In addition to education, we are working to increase the Military Lighting Overlay District
Dark Sky zone from three to five miles to enhance and preserve the night training
mission of Camp Bullis. We are also supporting the cities of Spring Branch and
Bulverde with their process to become International Dark Sky Communities. And every
October, The Hill Country Night Sky Month Proclamation is read by all Comal County
cities and the Comal County Commissioners Court.

CCFNS is in the process of setting up 14 semi-permanent Sky Quality Meter (SQM)
locations across Comal County. These meters objectively measure and can track the
degradation (or improvement) of the night sky because of the increased development
around Comal County. These SQM's were purchased through grants received from Hill
Country Alliance and GVTC Foundation Grants.
