Liberty Hill is the first International Dark Sky Community in Williamson County. This designation reflects our community’s commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our night skies even as our Hill Country town continues to grow.

Located just northwest of Austin, Liberty Hill is known for its scenic hills, historic charm, and strong sense of community. As development increased, residents noticed the gradual loss of visible stars and formed the Liberty Hill Save Our Stars volunteer group in 2020. Working closely with the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission, the group helped establish a comprehensive Outdoor Lighting Ordinance, adopted in 2022.

Since then, the City has inventoried and begun retrofitting public lighting, with a full transition planned by 2027. Save Our Stars continues to support the effort through lighting audits, public star parties, festival outreach, and the Night Sky Friendly Business program.

Liberty Hill’s Dark Sky designation demonstrates what a community can accomplish when people work together with pride and purpose. Our mission is to keep the stars big, bright, and visible for today and for future generations.
